Private Instruction
|
I started teaching guitar at age eighteen. I moved to New York City in 1976 and started privately tutoring the guitar. In 1986, I began my affiliation with Donald Sorel, Head of the Music Department at the Collegiate School for Boys in NYC.
Don's vision and support allowed me to build the most extensive private school guitar program in the NYC area. My yearly guitar recital remains one of the most popular yearly events for both students and parents.
Throughout the years my students have included:

"Good teachers inspire the journey towards mastery through a craft. The best can secretly relate this desire to one's path through life. I've had a few teachers in my life, but only one who actually inspired how I live." |

"I have known Ed Russell for almost 30 years. Ed began giving my son guitar lessons when he was 9 (he is now 16). Ed began teaching him classic rock from the very beginning with the goal of getting my son to love to play. No music or music theory that would have turned him off to playing. Just stuff to make playing the guitar fun! As a parent, I never made my son practice as I wanted him to play for his own enjoyment. Well, after 5 years of lessons, something amazing happened! It just all came together for my son and he became an amazing guitarist-- exceeding all my expectations! I even remember Ed predicting this would happen.
"I can't recommend Ed enough as a teacher-- one who makes it fun until the student themselves are ready to take things to the next level!" |
--Roger Sadowsky, luthier, Sadowsky Guitars

"Ed gave me the nuts and bolts of guitar playing... a foundation I still use today." |
--Ben Bronfman

"Ed Russell is an excellent guitar teacher. During his many years at Collegiate he has continued to inspire, motivate and challenge his students...to improve their technique and broaden their musicality..." |
--Don Sorel

"Nobody knows how to inspire young people to create music better than Ed Russell. I should know: he taught countless students in my school, and I witnessed firsthand the development of their skills and passion. He even got me to go out, buy a guitar, and take lessons! Ed Russell is a master musician and teacher." |
